Important The Hindu Editorial Vocabulary is an important part of SBI Clerk, SBI PO, SSC CGL and other exams. A major portion of the question paper tests your knowledge on vocabulary. To help you prepare, We bring you a list of commonly asked words in any competitive exam.In order to make it easy for all the aspirants, we have started our series named 'English Vinglish'. We have posted Important Vocabulary in Hindi and Tamil as well so that you can easily memorize them.

Punitive(adjective):
- दंडात्मक, கடுமையான அபராத, தண்டனை விதிக்கும்
- intended to punish someone or something
- extremely or unfairly severe or high
Synonyms: chastising, correcting, disciplining, penal
Antonyms: compensatory; acquitting, exculpating

Juxtaposed(adjective):

- मिलाना, मुक़ाबला करना, உரையான
- place or deal with close together for contrasting effect
Synonyms: abutting, neighboring, skirting, touching, verging
Antonyms: nonadjacent, noncontiguous

Spurt(verb):
- झपटना, झपट्टे से काम करना, திடீர், பீச்சியடி
- gush out in a sudden and forceful stream.
Synonyms: burst, flare, flare-up, flash, flicker, flurry
Antonyms: calm, doldrums, slump

Inaccessible(adjective):
- अप्राप्यता, अगम्यता, நெருங்கமுடியாமை, எட்டாத் தன்மை
- difficult or impossible to reach, approach, or understand: not accessible
Synonyms: inapproachable, inconvenient, unapproachable
Antonyms: obtainable, procurable, reachable

Potential(adjective):
- क्षमता, संभावित, சாத்தியமான, ஆற்றல் வளம்
- capable of becoming real
- a chance or possibility that something will happen or exist in the future
Synonyms: implicit, possible
Antonyms: actual, existent, factual, real

Facilitate(verb):
- की सुविधा, सुगम करना, எளிதாக்கும், இடர்பாடுகளை எளிதாக்கு
-  to make (something) easier: to help cause (something)
-  to help (something) run more smoothly and effectively
Synonyms: ease, grease, loosen
Antonyms: hinder, impede; retard; aggravate

Attribute(noun):
- विशेषता, गुण, பண்பு,  சுமத்து
- a usually good quality or feature that someone or something has
Synonyms: affection, characteristic, attribution, character

Anachronistic(adjective):
- कालभ्रमित, कालदोष-युक्त, அதன் காலத்திற்கு ஒவ்வாத
- something (such as a word, an object, or an event) that is mistakenly placed in a time where it does
not belong in a story, movie, etc
- a person or a thing that seems to belong to the past and not to fit in the present

Hurdle(noun):
- बाधा, बेंत का बाड़ा, தடையாக, இடைஞ்சல்
- one of a series of barriers to be jumped over in a race
- something that makes an achievement difficult
Synonyms: clog, cramp, crimp, deterrent, drag
Antonyms: catalyst, goad, impetus, incentive, spur

Ideological(adjective):
- विचारधारा, वैचारिक. கருத்தியல்
- based on or relating to a system of ideas and ideals, especially concerning economic or political
theory and policy

Affinity(noun):
- आत्मीयता, संबंध, நாட்டம், உறவு
- a feeling of closeness and understanding that someone has for another person because of their
similar qualities, ideas, or interests
- a liking for or an attraction to something
Synonyms: affection, inclination, aptitude, bent
Antonyms:  allergy, adverseness, aversion, disfavor

Prospects(noun):
- संभावनाओं, संभावना, வாய்ப்புக்கள், வாய்ப்ப வளம்
- the possibility that something will happen in the future
- someone or something that is likely to succeed or to be chosen
Synonyms: command, lookout, outlook, panorama
Antonyms: incumbent, officeholder, noncandidate

Inevitable (adjective):

- अपरिहार्य, अनिवार्य, தவிர்க்க முடியாத
- sure to happen, certain to happen; unavoidable.
Synonyms: certain, ineluctable, ineludible, inescapable
Antonyms: avoidable, evadable, uncertain, unsure

Ceded (verb):
- सौंप दिया, सौंपना, விட்டுக்கொடுத்தார்
- to give control of (something) to another person, group, government, etc.
Synonyms: surrender, cough up, deliver, give up
Antonyms: keep, retain, withhold

Indulged (verb):
- तृप्त करना, लगना, ஈடுபடுத்தி
- to allow (yourself) to have or do something as a special pleasure
Synonyms: bask, luxuriate, revel, wallow
Antonyms: bridle, check, constrain, curb

Strident(adjective):

- तेज़, चरचरानेवाला, கடுமையானதாகவே, கரகரப்பான
- sounding harsh and unpleasant
- expressing opinions or criticism in a very forceful and often annoying or unpleasant way

Conflict(noun):
- संघर्ष, टकराव, மோதல், சச்சரவு
- strong disagreement between people, groups, etc., that results in an often angry argument
- a difference that prevents agreement: disagreement between ideas, feelings, etc.
Synonyms: schism, strife, variance, war, warfare
Antonyms: accord, agreement, concord, concordance

Civic (adjective):

- नागरिक, नगर, குடிமை, நகர சம்பந்தமான
- of or relating to a city or town or the people who live there
- relating to citizenship or being a citizen

Avert(verb):
- टालना, बचा लेना, தவிர்ப்பதற்காகத்தான், தடுத்துதவு
- to turn (your eyes, gaze, etc.) away or aside
- to prevent (something bad) from happening
Synonyms: prevent, forestall, head off, help
Antonyms:  abet, aid, assist; ease, facilitate

Stern(adjective):
- कठोर, कड़ा, கடுமையான, கண்டிப்பான
- very serious especially in an unfriendly way
- expressing strong disapproval or criticism

Comply(verb):
- पालन करना, मानना, இணங்க, இசைந்து கொடு
-  to do what you have been asked or ordered to do
Synonyms: adhere, obey, attend, hear, heed
Antonyms: defy, disobey, rebel

 Obliquely(adjective):
- फेर, तिरछे तिरछे, மறைமுகமாக

Hassle (noun):

- समेकन, चकबंदी, ஒருங்கிணைப்பு, பலப்படுத்துதல்

Incipient(adjective):
- ठनना, प्रारंभिक, पैदा होनेवाला, தொடங்குகிற

Exacerbate(verb):
- ख़राब करना, तेज़ करना, இன்னும் அதிகப்படுத்தும், எரிச்சலூட்டு
- to make (a bad situation, a problem, etc.) worse

Antonyms: alleviate, assuage, ease, help,

Reiterate(verb):
- बार बार दुहराना, बारम्बार दुहराना, மீண்டும் வலியுறுத்துகிறேன், அறிவுறுத்து

Assertion(noun):

Lapses(noun):

- used to say that something or someone is small, unimportant, etc.

Robust(adjective):
- मजबूत, तगड़ा, வலுவான, பலமான
- successful or impressive and not likely to fail or weaken
Synonyms: hearty, healthy, sound, well, wholesome
Antonyms: ailing, diseased, ill, sick, unfit

Segregate(verb):
- अलग करना, पृथक करना, பிரித்து வை, தனிப்படுத்து
-  to separate groups of people because of their particular race, religion
Synonyms: cut off, insulate, seclude, isolate, separate
Antonyms: desegregate, integrate, reintegrate
